Lt. George Dixon's fabled twenty dollar gold piece

Legend had it that Dixon always kept that lucky coin with him, and the story proved true. The romantic tale turned out to be better than expected upon finding a sentimental engraving that recalled his brush with death.

The dented coin was minted in 1860, One side portrays Lady Liberty, the side the bullet hit. The other side has the Federal shield and eagle symbol. Part of that side is smoothed and has an inscription in cursive script that reads in four lines (the last being his initials):

April 6th 1862
My life Preserver
G. E. D.
