The golden needle in a mud and iron haystack

The most coveted prize that everyone had  hoped would be aboard the H.L. Hunley was discovered by senior archaeologist Maria Jacobsen late Wednesday evening May 23, 2001 as scientists were preparing to lift sediment with textiles beneath the forward conning tower. From where the coin was found, it was probably in the left pocket of Lt. Dixon's trousers or coat.

The find came right before the team ceased operations for the summer.
